Carved Watermelon Bowl

(June 16, 2015)

Impress your guests at your next BBQ with a creative fruit salad bowl. Cut a watermelon in half and scoop out the flesh. You can use a melon baller to make it easy and have cute little melon bites for your salad. Use a marker (I used a green sharpie) to sketch your design. By using your pumpkin carving set from last Halloween, you can easily carve any shape into your melon. Other kitchen tools such as a carrot peeler or butter curler can be used to scrape away the outside of the rind to create attractive designs.I found the easiest way to hold the "bowl" while carving was by sitting cross legged on the floor with a clean towel in my lap. This also helped catch the parts I carved off. Rinse your bowl with clean cold water, wrap in saran and refrigerate. When you are ready to serve, fill with a mixture of melon balls and whatever other fruit you like. I set mine in a bowl of ice for stability and to keep the salad cold.
